Child & Youth Coach
Resilient from within!
Welcome to my Power2U website! You were probably tipped off by a teacher, a neighbour, a friend, the parents of a teammate, or simply through word of mouth because you're looking for support for your son or daughter.

If you're looking for someone who enjoys working with children who, for example, feel a bit less comfortable in their own skin, are highly sensitive or dreamy by nature, are going through a tough divorce, perhaps are being bullied, or have experienced something sad that makes it harder for them to keep up socially, emotionally or cognitively — you've come to the right place.
Your child gets to know themselves better and feels good inside again.
Developing skills to stand firmer and set boundaries.
Learning to express what's inside in a pleasant way.
We work with 5 themes:
I have feelings, just like anyone else.
When I say what I want and feel, and thus speak up, another person can help me.
I am safe with myself, I am doing well.
When needed, I do things differently.
What do I want? And is that good for me?
The training takes about 4 months in total
In the first phone call with just the parent(s), we look at whether this training seems the right solution for what's going on.
During the intake the child/young person gets their own impression of me and the space; I ask a few short questions to get an impression too. After mutual agreement and satisfaction, we get started.
The sessions are once every 2 weeks (at a fixed time, to be agreed together), so things can settle and we can practise in between.
Children and parents may always call me in between with questions; this is free of charge.
Between the 5th and 6th session there is a month. That last session is to practise again what still feels difficult, or simply to do what was most fun once more.
Comfortable clothes and shoes.
Yoga mats, blankets, balls for various play and movement exercises, something to drink, music, notebook, pen, drawing materials and a hammock.
There is always an interim parent talk, without the child, to hear how things are going and check whether we are 'on course' together.
Finally, we always schedule a closing meeting with parents and child to wrap everything up.
Work can be done in groups or individually.

Resilient from within
It is my mission to empower every young person, to help them express themselves authentically and set their boundaries. These are important skills nowadays and lead to a healthy self-image and more self-confidence. When they feel comfortable in their own skin, focus and school performance often improve too.
But of course it's not just about performing at school or in sports; far more important is that children are simply in balance and go to school with pleasure, play sports or pursue other hobbies. Then the rest often follows naturally.
In addition, parents can sometimes get a bit stuck, for example because they no longer have a grip on their children's behaviour or the atmosphere at home isn't improving. I'm happy to look along to see which patterns have become ingrained that stand in the way of connection with their child.
I personally prefer to work beyond labels like AD(H)D, high sensitivity, dyslexia, ASS, OCD etc., but I am of course familiar with them. Yet my experience is that children start to shine again when we zoom in purely on who they are at their core, beyond the behaviour and their symptoms.
Ultimately it all comes down to safety in the body. As soon as we understand why we display certain behaviour and can develop awareness of underlying (often very understandable) patterns, we can change behaviour.
For this it's important that the child's/young person's environment is also involved in the whole set-up of the training, so that everyone is on the same page. I mean the parents, or grandparents, but also a mentor, teacher or the child's favourite football coach. It can be nice if they too are informed of where the child stands.
That can be too complex for young people to talk about

Child & Youth Coach
My name is Miek van Nieuwkuyk. I am a mother of 4 grown children and started my own practice in 2010 to coach children and young people in standing up for themselves, learning to express themselves better and therefore feeling more comfortable in their own skin.
It is my passion to work with children from about 11 or 12 years old and up because they can generally sense from that age what does and doesn't work for them, which dynamics at home or at school are disruptive, and how they themselves can make a difference in that.
Sometimes that skill has faded a bit or children find it exciting to speak up. Yet you see time and again how happy both children and their parents are when authentic connection is restored and the child no longer automatically goes into defence or shuts off from loved ones and friends.
Elements that recur in every session:
After a short time working in law, I had to change course and after completing the Pabo (teacher training) and a 3-year child coaching training, I chose to start my own practice. In addition, I trained as a trauma coach and therapist, because I also wanted to be able to bring in knowledge of our nervous system and stress system, with the fight, flight, freeze and fawn responses to overstimulation, into this work.
A warm and safe place

Feedback from children and their parents about this training
"My daughter goes to school with pleasure again and even takes part in the school musical; I would never have thought that! She expresses herself more clearly and can now also set her boundaries well."
Marijke S.
mother of Sanne, 14 y
"I learned that I should just ask for help, I always found that a bit scary. My teachers tell me they find me changed because they hear me more often in class now."

"My child has gained much more self-confidence and is now really comfortable in their own skin."

"My son now approaches teachers much more easily when he doesn't understand something. We are very happy about that. At home too he is much more cheerful with his brother and sisters."
P. v. W.
mother of Lex, 15 y
"I found the training super fun because Miek taught me how I myself could make sure we got a cosier atmosphere at home again. My parents weren't always very happy because I also pointed it out when they had to put their phone away, as agreed. At school I now have more friends too."
Finn

"Because my grandpa passed away suddenly I was very sad for a long time; at first I couldn't talk about it well. I accidentally shut myself off a bit from my friends. During the training I noticed they didn't find it strange at all that I was still struggling with it. I can now fortunately still talk about it with them. Things are much better now."
